During the Middle Ages the secret was worn beneath a Great Helmet and is therefore a sort of secret helmet. Amongst those engaged in one to one combat, the Great Helmet would be removed, and the secret was then worn as protection. Later, in the seventeenth century, noblemen wore the secret beneath their stylish hat should they still require additional
